Deputy D.A. Lauded for Anti-Bias Work
Deputy Dist. Atty. Carla Arranaga received accolades Friday from the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles for her efforts investigating and prosecuting hate crimes.
She was given the organization’s “Racial Justice” award during a symposium on race and diversity at USC.

Prosecutor--A story Saturday about Los Angeles County Deputy Dist. Atty. Carla Arranaga incorrectly identified the prosecutor of a case involving two white supremacists in the 1995 beating death of a homeless man in Lancaster. Deputy Dist. Atty. Jacqueline Lacey tried that case.
Arranaga, who heads the district attorney’s Hate Crimes Suppression Unit, developed a hate crimes protocol that police departments and other law enforcement agencies are using across the country, according to a statement from Dist. Atty. Gil Garcetti, who described Arranaga as a “trailblazer in the investigation and prosecution of hate crimes.”
In recent years, Arranaga prosecuted two white supremacists for the 1995 beating death of a homeless man in Lancaster; two other alleged white supremacists accused of planting fake bombs in the San Fernando Valley to drive out non-whites; and two reputed skinheads for a racially motivated attack on a Latino man, also in Lancaster.
