Thompson Leads Comets to Victory

Tina Thompson scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Western Conference-leading Houston Comets to an 83-66 victory over the Utah Starzz on Friday night before 6,916 at Salt Lake City.

Cynthia Cooper added 19 points and Sheryl Swoopes 14 for Houston, which beat Utah for the 14th time in 15 meetings.

Natalie Williams returned for Utah after missing three games because of a lower back strain and finished with nine points and eight rebounds. She was two for 12 from the field in 35 minutes.

New York 69, Indiana 60--Reserve guard Becky Hammon scored 16 points to lead the Liberty before 13,178 at Indianapolis.

Monica Maxwell scored 15 points to lead Indiana, which cut a 20-point deficit to 56-54 with 5:19 to play, then went without a field goal the next 5:11.

Portland 72, Seattle 61--Sylvia Crawley had 20 points and 11 rebounds before 9,390 at Portland, Ore., as the Fire stopped a six-game losing streak.

Sacramento 84, Washington 69--Tangela Smith scored 22 points and Yolanda Griffith added 21 for the Monarchs before 14,235 at Washington.
