The mentality behind the Board of Supervisors’ salary increases is comparable to that behind the toll road increases. Not popular, not doing the job properly? Throw more of the citizens’ money at them!

* I’m sure a lot of us would apply for a job that would offer a 19% pay raise without being held accountable for an increase in performance, longer hours or more workdays.

At a time when the economy is growing, I guess that our county government wants its share too. But wait. The companies that support our economy are growing because they have found better and less expensive ways to produce and improve their products.

OK, county government, show us how the proposed $4.5 million in pay raises will provide the Orange County taxpayers with better service and higher quality. I am not opposed to rewarding employees for quality work when tied to increased performance, nor am I opposed to cost-of-living increases, but giving a 19% increase “just because” irritates this taxpayer.
