Opportunities to Volunteer

The Volunteer Center of Los Angeles needs volunteers to help with parking and selling tickets during a Fourth of July fireworks show organized by the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce. Participants get free admission and parking during the event.

Camp counselors are needed to work with children who have HIV at Camp Laurel, an educational wilderness camp in the San Bernardino Mountains, in late August. Doctors, nurses and social workers are especially needed. Training is provided.

Penny Lane, which helps emotionally disturbed teens, needs mentors.

A program that uses pets to hasten patients’ recovery needs volunteers.

People also are needed at Burbank Temporary Aid Center, which provides food, shelter, clothing and medical help to low-income families. Call Joan Kagan at (818) 908-5128.

Guides and student volunteers are needed by the Los Angeles Zoo. There will be an information meeting for students July 8 at 10 a.m. and a meeting for prospective docents July 15 at 10 a.m. at Andrew Norman Education Center, 5333 Zoo Drive, Los Angeles.

The zoo offers training programs for both groups on basic zoology. A 22-week course for adults, held on Thursdays and Saturdays, begins in October.

Completion of the program can count toward eight units of UCLA Extension credit. After the course, docents must volunteer 100 hours a year for two years.

Students, who must be in ninth, 10th or 11th grade, take an 18-week course on Saturdays, starting in October.

Upon completion, students must volunteer 40 hours a year for two years.
