Vote Not Free or Fair, Monitor Says

The head of the European Union team monitoring this weekend’s parliamentary elections in Zimbabwe said the poll had been seriously flawed. “The term ‘free and fair elections’ is not applicable in these elections,” Pierre Schori told a news conference in Harare, the Zimbabwean capital. Schori said the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front party of President Robert Mugabe had been responsible for the bulk of the problems. At least 30 people were killed in the run-up to the elections.
