* Update--The defending MLS champions have won only four of 18 games but are on the mend, according to Eddie Pope, one of the team’s three U.S. national team defenders. Pope said D.C. United’s struggles are, in part, a reflection of other teams getting stronger. “Any player on the field can feel that the league has gotten better, the players have gotten stronger, the teams have gotten smarter,” he said. “Bad circumstances and bad luck, and also some bad play as well, it’s been a combination of things for us. The second half of the season we’re starting to adjust. Hopefully we’ll start to do better.” D.C. United has been beaten only once (2-1-3) since its 2-1 loss to the Galaxy at the Rose Bowl on May 20. By contrast, Los Angeles has won only once (1-3-2) since that game.
