Hahn Refuses to Settle Airport Suit
Los Angeles City Atty. James Hahn on Wednesday rejected a bid by Burbank Airport to settle a 5-year-old lawsuit stemming from environmental reviews over airport projects.
Hahn said he turned down the settlement offer because it didn’t reflect the concerns of local residents, including a late-night flight curfew, limits on daytime flights and the “regional share-the-noise problem.”
The suit stems from a 1993 plan by the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority to build a 27-gate terminal on land owned by Lockheed Martin.
Hahn’s decision comes three weeks after the Los Angeles City Council voted to delay consideration of the settlement issue.
Airport Authority spokesman Victor Gill said the decision to drop the settlement was “disappointing and ironic,” given the fact Hahn’s office originally helped negotiate the settlement offer.
“The city continues to impede a regional airport facility at Burbank while at the same time relying on Burbank Airport to handle more traffic as part of its planning for the future of LAX,” Gill said.
