After hours of debate over the proposed Newport Dunes resort on Tuesday night, the City Council decided to postpone a vote on the project until September.

The Dunes has proposed to build a 470-room hotel and 31,000 square feet of convention space at its location near the Back Bay. Some residents are protesting the development, saying that it would create too much traffic and could harm the environment.

Mayor John Noyes proposed the delay, to the displeasure of representatives of the developer, because many council members will be out of town during the summer.
