John Wayne Airport was the 18th-busiest airport in the world in 1999, according to a study by a Swiss airport association.

The annual study, completed in late March, was compiled by the Airports Council International, a Switzerland-based association of the world’s airports. Facilities were ranked based on total landings and takeoffs of both private and commercial planes.

The busiest airport was Hartsfield in Atlanta with 909,911 takeoffs and landings, followed by Chicago with 894,641, Dallas/Fort Worth with 831,959, Los Angeles International with 772,613 and Phoenix with 561,161. The other California airports to make the list of 25 busiest were Oakland and San Francisco.
