Curtis’ Grand Slam in the Eighth Inning Lifts Calabasas, 4-0

Randy Curtis hit one-out grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Calabasas High a 4-0 victory over Redondo in a pool-play game of the Westside tournament Friday at Calabasas.

Curtis’ home run ended a pitching duel between Calabasas’ Tony Sulser and Redondo’s Jake Kaplan. Sulser, a right-hander who has signed with Arizona, threw a one-hitter with 14 strikeouts and three walks. He faced 28 batters, striking out five of the last seven.

Nate Moore led off the fourth inning with Redondo’s only hit.

In other Westside tournament games:

Hart 11, Beverly Hills 1--Eric Posthumus pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine at Beverly Hills in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Catcher Brandon Montemayor went four for four with four runs batted in. Hart, ranked No. 1 in the region by The Times, scored seven runs in the second inning. Chris Gagnon and Matt Moore each had two hits for the Indians.

Sylmar 1, Canyon 0--Pinch-runner Felipe Samano scored from third base on a fielder’s choice with none out in the fifth inning to lift the host Spartans.

Winning pitcher Ivan Lopez allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two in 6 1/3 innings. Canyon pitcher Matt Palmer threw a four-hitter, striking out three and walking two.

Ventura 9, Royal 2--Kelly Callanan had a double and a triple and pitcher Jon Bierly struck out four for Ventura at Royal.

Chatsworth 4, Hueneme 2--Greg Wallis contributed a two-run double and left-hander Sean Richards threw a five-hitter for host Chatsworth.

Camarillo 12, Buena 0--Brad Boyer had a two-run triple and a double, and Spencer Wyman hit a two-run home run for host Camarillo in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

John Gonzales pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts and two walks for the Scorpions.

Moorpark 5, Venice 2--Chris Nealon had three hits, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning, for Moorpark at Venice.

In the El Segundo tournament:

Crespi 4, Lynwood 0--Marshall Plouffe allowed two hits in six-plus innings, striking out five and walking four for Crespi at Pierce College.

Brian Horwitz relieved Plouffe and picked up a save after pitching a scoreless seventh.

Simi Valley 19, Muir 2--John Arisohn had two hits and drove in two runs, and Brandon Palomarez had four hits for Simi Valley at Muir.

Agoura 14, Dorsey 0--Paul Farinacci drove in seven of 10 second-inning runs with a three-run home run and a grand slam at Dorsey. Tyler Stauffer pitched a one-hitter with seven strikeouts for Agoura.

El Segundo 8, Littlerock 2--Steven Browning had three hits, including a double for host Littlerock.

In the San Fernando Valley tournament:

Quartz Hill 3, Monroe 0--Chris Walker had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings, finishing with a one-hitter with four strikeouts and two walks for Quartz Hill at Monroe.

Vladimir Rivas singled with two out in the seventh for the only hit for Monroe (0-2). Carlos Burkhart hit a two-run home run in the third and an RBI single in the fifth to drive in all of Quartz Hill’s runs.

Westlake 8, Granada Hills 0--Jon Shepard and Corey Taillon each had two hits, and Chris White and Joey Guy combined on a four-hitter for visiting Westlake.

Palmdale 9, Cleveland 1--Matt Harrington pitched four innings, allowing one hit and striking out nine for visiting Palmdale, ranked No. 8 in the region by The Times.

Chaminade 10, South Gate 0--Erik Johnson had three hits, including a two-run home run, and T.J. Franco threw a two-hitter with four strikeouts for host Chaminade in a game called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Poly 3, La Canada 2--Gabe Pena singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh for the host Parrots (2-0).

Carlos Cantabrana and Eduardo Baeza combined on a three-hitter for Poly.

St. Francis 13, North Hollywood 0--Errol Simonitsch pitched a two-hitter with five strikeouts and one walk for St. Francis in a game called after five innings because of the 10-run rule at North Hollywood (1-1).

Fernando Valenzuela Jr. had a home run and a double for St. Francis.

Burbank 7, Franklin 1--Steve Ellsworth pitched a five-hitter and Ray Sanchez hit a two-run triple for Burbank at Franklin.

Highland 10, Grant 0--Tommy Gonzales pitched a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts for host Highland, ranked No. 6 in the region by The Times, in game called after six innings because of the 10-run rule.

Fred Rico had a two-run home run in the first, a two-run double in the second and later tripled.

Thousand Oaks 7, Kennedy 2--Adam Leavitt had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for Thousand Oaks at Kennedy. Winning pitcher Greg Simonetti struck out five in six innings.

Lancaster 4, San Fernando 2--Tyler Bain’s home run broke a 1-1 tie and ignited a three-run eighth inning for Lancaster at San Fernando (1-1).

Birmingham 11, Paraclete 3--Catcher Jose Carrillo had two hits, including double, and threw out five runners for host Birmingham (2-0). Rosalio Garcia had three hits and three RBIs for the Patriots.

In a nonleague game:

Campbell Hall 8, Viewpoint 3--Michael Frost struck out 10 and walked none in five innings for host Campbell Hall.
