GARDEN GROVE

About 200 residents turned out Monday to discuss their fears about a registered high-risk sex offender living in their neighborhood, near Gilbert Elementary School. Eldon Merle West, 60, recently was released after serving 8 1/2 years of a 20-year sentence for a 1991 sexual assault, his second. At the meeting, Assemblyman Ken Maddox (R-Garden Grove) said he’s introduced a bill to increase the distance West and other sex offenders must live from schools. Police attempted to reassure residents by saying West is monitored by an electronic bracelet from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
