From Times Wire Reports

A wooden boat jammed with illegal migrants from the Dominican Republic smashed apart in heavy surf within sight of Puerto Rico, killing at least 10 people and leaving dozens missing. An estimated 70 people undertook the 75-mile crossing. Ten bodies were recovered. As many as 27 of the people on the boat made it to shore and were taken into custody, according to police and the U.S. Border Patrol. An unknown number of passengers disappeared in the coastal brush and hills. About 60 yards from the town of Isabela, a woman fell overboard in heavy surf. Trying to rescue her, the crew dropped anchor and the seas wedged the boat into rocks where it was demolished, survivors said. Each year, thousands from the impoverished Dominican Republic illegally try to reach Puerto Rico.
