A 78-year-old Ventura man was found beaten and shot in the head in his bedroom, and police are searching for a woman they believe knows something about the crime, authorities said Saturday.

Jack T. Jamar was in critical condition Saturday night at Ventura County Medical Center, police said. He was shot once in the head with a small-caliber gun, according to Ventura Police Sgt. Bob Anderson.

The motive for the attack is unknown, but police are looking for a woman who was at the house shortly before Jamar was found, Anderson said.

The woman apparently found undisclosed personal property containing Jamar’s address, went to his home in the 4300 block of Varsity Drive to return it but got no response, police said.

She then went to a neighbor’s house, dropped off the item and left, authorities said.

The neighbor became suspicious and called police.

When officers arrived, they found the front door of Jamar’s house open and Jamar conscious but severely wounded, Anderson said.

Police believe the shooting occurred only a short time before officers arrived. Authorities did not release a description of the woman they are seeking.
