‘Mars’ Mission a Success at No. 1
Critics may have thought the film came from another planet, but “Mission to Mars” was a hit where it counts--at the box office. The Brian De Palma-directed science-fiction film debuted at No. 1, grossing $22.9 million.
“The Ninth Gate,” a supernatural thriller starring Johnny Depp, opened in second place with $6.6 million, while Paramount Classics’ “Deterrence” debuted in seven theaters, grossing $23,318.
The weekend’s top 12 films grossed $66.6 million, a 3% drop from the same weekend last year.
