L.A. Marathon

Re Craig Godwin’s March 8 letter: Here are the facts regarding medical support at the L.A. Marathon. Among the 235 medical professionals volunteering at fully stocked medical stations at miles six, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 22, 24 and two finish-line medical tents, there were 15 doctors, 18 registered nurses and 12 first aid and emergency medical technicians. Two ham radio operators at each medical station, one at each water station at every mile and additional ham operators at the halfway point of each mile were available to assist persons in need of medical attention. At the finish line, the fully staffed medical tents with blanket warmers to treat hypothermia were never full.

After 4 p.m., two medical teams in vans stocked with supplies locate the last runner and continuously sweep the course to assure that anyone in need of attention gets it.

The large majority of these dedicated medical professionals volunteer their time in support of participants in the marathon.
