A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Orlando, Fla., was forced to return to La Guardia Airport minutes after takeoff Sunday when the landing gear failed to retract, authorities said.

Smoke was later detected in the Boeing 737’s cabin, forcing an evacuation that left four passengers with minor injuries.

Emergency landing--Because of an editing error, an Associated Press story on March 20 incorrectly identified a Delta Air Lines plane that returned to La Guardia Airport in New York after the landing gear failed to retract. The plane was a Boeing 727.

Delta Flight 1971, with 139 passengers and six crew members, landed without incident, said Port Authority spokesman Allen Morrison. But the pilot detected smoke in the cabin after landing and decided to evacuate the aircraft, deploying the emergency chutes, Morrison said.
