Free Expression
Paul Weingarten states in his March 16 letter on Dr. Laura Schlessinger that he believes people have “a right and indeed an obligation to challenge and even suppress ideas known to lead to murderous violence, such as racial intolerance, anti-Semitism and yes, homophobia.”
I don’t know what communist state Weingarten resides in, but here in the United States, he has only the right to challenge ideas, not suppress them. As citizens of this fine country, we have the constitutional right to express any ideas, including racial intolerance, anti-Semitism, homophobia and hate. Acting on your ideas is another matter.
Expressing disagreement is not hate, it’s an exercise of free speech. Hitler suppressed ideas. Stalin suppressed ideas. China suppresses ideas. Now, that’s hate!

The real question for Dr. Laura is: “How many gay teenagers have killed themselves because of your rhetoric?”
The answer is: “We’ll never know.”
