New West Symphony’s “Musics Alive!” annual concert series will return to Ventura this weekend with a spotlight on Cuba. The four-concert event will kick off Friday with a flamenco party at the Pierpont Inn, featuring Emmy Award-winning dancer Yaelisa and her Solera Flamenco Dance Company. Solera and gang will return Saturday afternoon for a free family concert. In the evening, “Cuba, Spain and the Orchestra” will highlight the work of composer-in-residence Tania Leon. On Sunday, piano duo Gloria Cheng and Vicki Ray will present “Cuba Alive,” performing musical portraits of pre-revolutionary Cuba, with works by Gershwin and Copland.

Theater

Cabrillo Music Theatre will return to the Kavli Theatre at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza beginning Friday with the musical comedy “Funny Girl.” The Broadway hit recalls the life of legendary Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice, including her bittersweet romance with a gambler. The production is presented in association with the Gold Coast Performing Arts Assn.

Swing City

Swing dance gala “Monsters of Swing” unfolds this weekend in Ventura. The event will feature live bands, workshops led by professional dancers and instructors, and dance contests. The fun and competition begin Friday. Bands will include the Jive Aces, Swingtips, Lee Press-On & the Nails, Speakeasy Spies and Swingerhead.

Ballet

The State Street Ballet’s four-part season finale is this weekend in Thousand Oaks. “(Not So Strictly) Ballroom,” led by artistic director Rodney Gustafson, consists of four ballets set to popular American music and choreographed by George Balanchine (“Who Cares?”), Robert Sund (“B.A.N.D.: Bing, Andrews, Nat, Duke”), Victoria Simon (“Salute to Sinatra”) and Heinz Poll (“Eight by Benny Goodman”).
