Laguna Hills Beats No. 2 Barons on Corley’s Hit in 13th

Erica Corley hit a game-winning single in the 13th inning Thursday to give Laguna Hills a 1-0 victory over Fountain Valley, ranked second in the county, in a nonleague softball game that lasted nearly three hours.

Freshman Brittani Fait gave up six hits and earned the victory for the visiting Hawks (9-3), who are ranked seventh. Corley’s drive to center scored Dom Lastrapes from second, and Fait worked out of a 13th-inning jam to secure the victory.

One week ago, Corley struck out to leave the bases loaded in the seventh inning of the Hawks’ 6-5 loss to Irvine.

“I knew I’d get the opportunity to get the winning hit again and it came soon,” Corley said.

The decisive hit came off Jackie Brown, who relieved a fatigued Natalie King, who exited after striking out 17 and giving up two hits through 12 innings.

“I was exhausted,” said King, a senior.

Fait struck out only five, but kept the ball low as the left side of the Hawk infield gathered everything hit its way.

Lastrapes had the only two hits off King. Jenny Doezie had two hits for the Barons (6-2).
