A 12-year-old boy who forced his elementary school class and teacher to the floor at gunpoint was formally charged with illegal possession of a firearm in a school safety zone on Friday, Columbiana County Prosecutor Robert Herron said.

He said that at a hearing in Columbiana County Juvenile Court, the boy was also charged with aggravated menacing, inducing panic and carrying a concealed weapon.

The boy, who said he wanted to be with his mother in jail, will remain in custody until he is arraigned Monday.

The incident occurred Thursday at McKinley Elementary School in Lisbon, Ohio. No one was hurt.

Linda Robb, the teacher who coaxed the 9-millimeter semiautomatic handgun away from him, said she knew the boy and felt she could talk with him.

“I asked him ‘Is that real?’ and he took the clip out and put it back in,” she said on NBC-TV’s “Today” show. She said she told the boy she cared about him and asked if he would like to talk with her before he did anything.

Robb said she put her arms around the boy and he gave her the gun, which she put on a table outside the classroom.
