Stewart Makes Her Points at National Meet

Kelly Stewart of Newport Beach, a sophomore at Wheaton (Ill.) College, had an outstanding swimming performance in the recent NCAA Division III national championships at Emory University in Atlanta.

Stewart, a former Calvary Chapel swimmer, won the 50 freestyle (23.76) and 200 freestyle (1:52.09), and finished second in the 100 freestyle (51.88). All three efforts were school records.

She also swam on four relay teams. The 400 medley and 800 freestyle relay teams finished third, the 400 freestyle relay team took fourth and the 200 medley relay team was sixth.

Stewart accounted for 57 of her team’s 261 points, the second-most points by a swimmer in the meet.

Wheaton College finished fifth overall. Stewart earned All-American honors in all seven events.

Two former Orange County high school players are members of the Wake Forest team that is 17-7 and ranked 22nd nationally by Baseball America. Sophomore pitcher Ryan Lewis (Corona del Mar High) has made eight appearances, all in relief, and is 0-1 with a 2.77 earned-run average. Freshman outfielder Ryan Johnson (Laguna Hills High) has started 11 times and played in six other games. He is batting .268 with two homers and seven runs batted in.

Sophomore second baseman Lovie Jung (Ocean View) is leading the Fresno State softball team in hitting this month. She is batting .364 with nine runs and 12 RBIs for the month. She is four for four in stolen bases. Jung is batting .340 for the season.

Sophomore Anna Lembke (Ocean View) was a top reserve on the Pepperdine women’s basketball team that won the West Coast Conference regular-season title. She averaged 6.6 points and 4.6 rebounds and her 74.1% free-throw percentage was the best on the team. Pepperdine was eliminated in the NCAA tournament’s first round by Virginia and finished 21-10.

UC Riverside second baseman Randy Blood (Calvary Chapel), a freshman, has driven in 13 runs and his batting average of .380 is fourth-best on the team. He also has seven doubles for the Highlanders.

Former Tustin pitcher/first baseman Chad Chop, a sophomore, is batting .329 at San Diego State. He has six doubles and 27 RBIs. Chop led the Aztecs in hitting as a freshman (.326).

Distance runner Donna Mills (Newport Harbor) was named the top track and field performer in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. for the week of March 6-12. A senior at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Mills set a school record in the 800 meters, won the 1,500 meters and anchored the winning 400 relay team at a five-way meet.
