After just a year in existence, the Melinda Heights Elementary School Parent Teacher Assn. has come a long way.
When the school first opened, families were thrown together but “didn’t really click,” President Eileen Minahan said. Volunteers were in short supply and meeting attendance lagged.
“A lot of people said, ‘PTA? It’s cliquey, we don’t feel welcome, the meetings are boring,’ ” Minahan said. “We knew it was a problem we needed to work on.”
But now, the PTA has more than tripled its volunteer hours and meeting attendance, and become one of the top 10 PTAs in the state, an honor they will accept at the state PTA convention in May.
