City officials have approved designs for a monument commemorating the city’s 75th anniversary of incorporation.
Planning commissioners on Monday unanimously OKd the monument plans, which call for the mounting of a bronze plaque inscribed with the names of about 80 of the city’s founding families. The descendants of those families donated 75 trees to make up Pioneers Grove in Portola Park, where the monument will be placed, said Robert Dale, a spokesman for the Old Settlers Historical Society, which is in charge of the project.
Historical society officials said the base of the monument will be made from the bricks of old city buildings that have been torn down. It is hoped that the monument’s close proximity to the Children’s Museum will stimulate youngsters’ interest in the city’s past.
