IRVINE

Sounds began streaming from all corners of the room last week as Irvine High School students filed into the gymnasium to celebrate winning a Grammy Foundation Award for their music program, one of the top 10 in the country.

The jazz band’s saxophone soloist ran through his virtuoso piece one more time. Next to him, the school’s choir was warming up. On the other side of the room, the orchestra’s string section tuned its instruments. And some kids on the bleachers began humming melodies from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” which the school’s students will bring to the stage next week.

They were a cross-section of Irvine High’s extensive music program, which received the national recognition from the Grammy Foundation this year. Out of 18,000 applications, which addressed everything from the number of music teachers to orchestra repertoire, Irvine High was chosen as one of 10 Grammy Signature Schools this year. Along with a golden gramophone trophy, a foundation representative presented a check for $5,000 to the school.

The Grammy Foundation is part of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, which annually gives out the Grammy Awards.
