Cell Phone Tower to Be Discussed

Share

Dozens of angry and concerned residents and parents are expected to pack the auditorium at Balboa Gifted Magnet School tonight to protest plans to build a 70-foot cellular phone tower across the street from the school.

Suzanne Waisbren, a mother of two students at the elementary school, said parents and neighbors oppose the plan by AirTouch Communications and Pacific Bell because of potential health risks and lowered property values.

In a letter obtained by parents, AirTouch and Pacific Bell said the tower would improve cellular phone service in the north San Fernando Valley, particularly near Cal State Northridge.

Representatives from the cellular phone companies and the Los Angeles Unified School District, including school board member Julie Korenstein, will attend the 7 p.m. meeting.

The school is at 17020 Labrador St., near Balboa Boulevard and Nordhoff Street.
