Finally, Olivewood Elementary is living up to its name.

An Arbor Day celebration last week began with workers planting an olive tree--the first on campus. The irony was not lost on teacher Sharon Kaufman, who was among those attending the planting.

The tree-planting celebration capped a yearlong focus on the school’s trees. Last year, a horticulturist labeled each of the 33 trees with its common name and students dedicated their yearbook to campus greenery.

“We thought our campus was unique because we have mature trees that the newer schools don’t,” Kaufman said of 30-year-old Olivewood.

At the celebration, students sang, read poems and led tours of the campus tree life.
