The satellite telephones switch between satellite, digital and analog service and can be used in remote areas not served by land lines or cellular networks, Carona said.

The telephones already have proved their usefulness during a Los Angeles County search for three girls who got lost in the Claremont area April 27, Carona said. None of the girls was injured.
