Douglas M. Davidson, night operations manager for the Los Angeles Times, has died of cancer. He was 52.

“This is indeed sad news,” said Michael Parks, former editor of The Times, who worked with Davidson. “We all appreciated the heart, soul and love that Doug put into The Times every day. For me, Doug was always the exemplar of the dedication that newspaper people bring to our profession.”

Davidson began working for The Times in 1967 as a bicycle messenger in the dispatch department. His first job was to pick up advertisements and news copy.

Over the years he worked his way up through the company to become lead dispatch desk clerk, advertising production coordinator, assistant to the operations director of the Orange County edition and, finally, operations manager based at Times Mirror Square in downtown Los Angeles.

Davidson, who lived in Orange, had been on medical leave since January.

He is survived by his wife, Colleen, and two grown daughters, Jennifer and Shannon.
