Humans Ate Seafood Earlier Than Previously Thought

Humans began camping on the shore and eating seafood at least 125,000 years ago, about 10,000 years earlier than previously believed, according to an international team of archeologists. The team reports in today’s Nature that they found Paleolithic hand axes and obsidian flakes and blades on a fossil reef terrace on the Red Sea coast of Eritrea. The reef terrace is about six miles long and 18 to 42 feet below sea level. The finding supports the idea that modern humans originated in Africa because the site is on the route that such humans would have followed in migrating to Europe and Asia.
