Images Cited as Black Stereotypes

Share

The cartoon on Page E2 that accompanied “Snack Food for Thought” (March 29) depicts a woman or girl who has on a radio headset and a man with big lips on a phone. These are stereotyped images of black people. Please do not tell me they are not black people--your artist has given them black stereotypical features used by the white world: big rear end and big lips--plus always that music thing with blacks, right? Why not put headphones on a white girl or how about a white kid “huffing” or speeding down the street? This section and your paper continually stereotype images of black people with music, phones or food. Why not have the black person at the head of the class or at the computer? You have the power to stop this practice.
