“Shockheaded Peter,” making its West Coast premiere, is based on a children’s book, but it’s definitely not for wee ones. This macabre staging of the 19th century “Struwwelpeter,” Heinrich Hoffman’s cautionary tales about disobedient children, is a mix of Grand Guignol, puppetry and Victorian melodrama, with songs by London’s underground cult trio the Tiger Lillies.

* “Shockheaded Peter,” UCLA, Freud Playhouse, Westwood. Tuesdays-Fridays, 8 p.m.; Saturdays, 5 and 10 p.m.; Sundays, 8 p.m. Ends May 28. $35. (310) 825-2101.

7:30 pm: Movie

In the decades since it opened in 1933, the Marx Brothers’ classic “Duck Soup” has gotten its due: It ranked 85th on the American Film Institute’s Top 100 movies, it’s on Leonard Maltin’s list of 100 Must-See Films of the 20th Century, and was added to the National Film Registry. “Duck Soup” is undeniably the Marx Brothers’ masterpiece, a political satire in which Groucho becomes the dictator of the fictional Freedonia and hires Chico and Harpo as spies. It’s also the last film Zeppo made with the team.

The Los Angeles Guitar Quartet’s new CD, “Air & Ground,” is a heady mix of string music that defies easy classification. The foursome--John Dearman, Bill Kanengiser, Scott Tennant and Andrew York--got together in 1980 at USC. They’ve toured the world but come back tonight to their namesake city.
