The city will hold a grand opening ceremony for Florence Joyner Olympiad Park on May 27 featuring a number of Olympic athletes who have trained or lived in the city and will be memorialized in the park.
The city is putting the finishing touches on the 11.5-acre park on Olympiad Road north of Alicia Parkway and south of Applegate Drive.
Keith Rattay, the city’s maintenance service manager, said construction at the park is moving along as expected and everything should be ready by opening day.
The City Council voted in May to name the park after the late Olympic gold medalist Florence Griffith Joyner. It will feature a large bronze statue of Joyner and an Olympic Plaza honoring athletes from Mission Viejo who have medaled in the international competition.
