A suspect in the 1996 killing of a La Habra man was arrested Thursday night at Los Angeles International Airport after evading authorities for more than four years, police said.

Alex Jose Esquivel, 26, was arrested at 9:30 p.m. in connection with the slaying of Robert Holguin, 46, who was shot at Cypress Avenue and Grace Street in La Habra on Feb. 17, 1996.

Officers from the La Habra Police Department, the FBI, the U.S. Marshal’s office, the Orange County district attorney’s office and authorities in Mexico, where Esquivel had been living, were involved in apprehending him.

“We’re glad we’re finally able to bring this thing to a conclusion,” La Habra Police Lt. Steve Costanzo said Friday.

“While it may take some time, the fact we have him in custody makes everyone feel a lot better.”

Esquivel is being held at the Orange County Jail on bail of $1 million.

Arraignment is set for Monday.
