* Alexander Cockburn only tells half the story of San Diego’s impending back-country tragedy (Commentary, May 4). The county’s rezoning plan not only threatens to divert much-needed water in an already dry region, as the EPA has noted, it imperils drinking water supplies in four major reservoirs. Suburbanization and more intense farming in the east county will increase the already serious pollution of the county’s wetlands, bays and beaches through pesticide, fertilizer and highway runoff.
For these reasons, urban as well as rural environmental groups are deeply alarmed at the county plan and the EPA’s backpedaling.
