Man Burned in Blast at Suspected Drug Lab

A 21-year-old man was critically injured Wednesday in a fire and explosion that authorities suspect was fueled by the chemicals used in an illegal methamphetamine lab.

Several hours after the 1:20 p.m. explosion, Los Angeles County fire and hazardous materials officials were still investigating the cause of the blast at the apartment complex at 7022 Marbrisa Avenue.

But Huntington Park police said the evidence suggests the explosion was caused by the chemicals used to make methamphetamines.

Police said the ground-floor apartment caught fire and then exploded, destroying much of the two-story apartment building. The apartment did not have any furniture or appliances. Police had not identified the injured man.
