City Reviews Improvements to Water System

A master plan designed to improve local water reservoirs and expand the city’s municipal water system was presented to the City Council on Monday night.

The master plan will be used to help determine a financing plan for the improvements.

The water system consists of two water treatment plants, six reservoirs, three booster stations--which pump water--and 12 active wells.

The Tustin Water Service provides water to an estimated 63,600 residents.

The master plan recommends that three new wells be drilled, that the Tustin Avenue and Beneta wells be replaced, and that permanent generators be installed to provide the system with an adequate emergency water supply.

The plan also suggests a new Main Street Reservoir and a new Rawlings Reservoir. The other four reservoirs--Foothill, Simon Ranch, Newport Avenue and John Lyttle--should undergo repairs.

Construction of a new booster station at Rawlings Reservoir and replacement of the Simon Ranch booster station is also recommended.

Construction of the Main Street Reservoir and booster station began this year. The overall improvements are estimated to cost $47 million and are scheduled to be completed over the next several years.
