HUD Seminar Looks at Abandoned Sites
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will hold a workshop Tuesday to teach community leaders how to stimulate economic development at abandoned commercial and industrial sites.
The workshop, titled “Practical Community-Based Approach to Redevelopment of Brownfield Sites,” will be held at the Gold Coast Small Business Development Center in Ventura.
Brownfields are areas that have been abandoned because of industrial usage that may have contaminated the site.
Four panels during the daylong workshop will address solutions, challenges and case studies. Regional and local experts will sit on four panels: Understanding and Managing Environmental Liabilities, Community Involvement in the Brownfield Process, Financing Brownfield Projects and Building an Effective Brownfield Team.
Ventura Councilman Brian Brennan and Lauri Flack of the Westside Community Council will share their strategies for organizing Ventura’s west side and securing Environmental Protection Agency demonstration sites in the community.
Rochelle Margolin, economic development associate for the city of Ventura, will be part of the panel on building an effective team, including partnerships with area universities and effective regional policies.
