Behind the Scenes at the Food Drive

* Re “For One Day, Mailboxes Double as Food Drops,” May 14:

It was a nice article on the food drive. But there is no mention of how the food gets from the post offices to the food bank.

Over a dozen volunteer truck drivers and North Orange County Regional Occupational Program students transport the food. I am one of these drivers.

For us drivers it is not a one-day event. All the donated trucks and trailers are picked up early Friday morning and dropped off at the postal locations with supplies. Saturday is the food drive.

We also load the trucks, not with fork lifts but pure people power.

Sunday the trucks and trailers have to be returned to the donors.

For myself, I have been on the other end of food drives, a grateful recipient of this food. This is my chance to give back what I have been given in our time of need.
