Sedona Carves Out a New Amphitheater
Sedona is getting a performance hall to match its setting: an outdoor amphitheater that seats up to 5,500, set amid the much-photographed red-rock scenery on a knoll on the outskirts of the Arizona resort town.
Named for the St. Louis Rams owner who helped fund it, the Georgia Frontiere Performance Pavilion, opening Friday with a concert by the Phoenix Symphony, will be Sedona’s largest performance venue, officials said. It’s the core of the 50-acre Sedona Cultural Park, which officials hope will become a regional arts center. For now, it includes an arts and technology center for colleges and trail heads for the adjacent forest. An “arts village” with galleries, restaurants and stores is planned.
The amphitheater’s opening season, which runs through October, has a varied lineup, including singer Emmylou Harris (June 10), the play “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” (June and July, various dates) and “Sedona Jazz on the Rocks” concerts (Sept. 23 to 25).
