State Tax Rebate
* Is it just a coincidence that Gov. Gray Davis’ much hyped $150-per-taxpayer proposed rebate almost exactly offsets his much less hyped increase in the state disability tax enacted April 1? Instead of working the Legislature to approve his refund, why doesn’t he cancel his SDI increase? The argument they are two different types of taxes doesn’t wash.
I suspect this won’t happen because politicians like to keep tax reductions small, high profile and temporary. Davis was handed a freebie and he took it. The balance in the state coffers stays the same but the publicity is priceless.
