City Budget Sent to Riordan for OK
The City Council put the final touches on the city’s $4.4-billion budget Tuesday and handed it over to Mayor Richard Riordan for approval.
In keeping with their vote last week, the council rejected the mayor’s efforts to earmark federal tobacco settlement money for Rampart-related lawsuits and to cut off funding for the controversial L.A. Bridges anti-gang program.
But the lawmakers met Riordan halfway on his proposal to increase funding for street resurfacing.
After initially rejecting the mayor’s proposal to spend enough money to resurface 245 miles of road next year, up from 220 miles this year, the council on Tuesday agreed to include funding to cover half of the mayor’s proposed 25-mile increase.
Keeping the bulk of Riordan’s proposed 2000-01 budget intact, the council also agreed to allocate money for new libraries, more after-school programs and additional firefighting equipment.
