SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

Five elementary schools will be able to continue operating on alternative timetables next year, and most can keep the schedule the following year as well, Capistrano Unified trustees decided this week.

The school board on Monday approved “banked minutes” schedules at John Malcolm in Laguna Niguel, Oak Grove in Aliso Viejo, Ole Hanson in San Clemente, Viejo in Mission Viejo and San Juan in San Juan Capistrano.

In a banked schedule, teachers and students log extra class time four days a week and finish early one day a week. On short days, teachers spend time in staff development meetings comparing information, mapping out curricula and goals for each grade level and analyzing test data.
