Police Foundation to Give $105,000 for Youth Units
The nonprofit Los Angeles Police Foundation will donate $105,000 to help fund LAPD youth and crime prevention programs, Police Chief Bernard C. Parks announced Wednesday.
Grant money from the Foundation, which was founded by Parks and his wife, Bobbie, will help finance programs not accounted for in the recently city budget.
Each of the LAPD’s 18 stations will receive about $5,000 for youth intervention programs, with another $10,000 earmarked to boost membership in the Explorer Scouts, a youth program in which teenagers receive police training and perform community service.
“Often we find in city government that those programs don’t get significant funding,” Parks said.
Parks said he hopes to increase participation in the program from about 800 to 2,000 over the next year.
An additional $5,000 will go to the LAPD’s community relations section to cover production of crime prevention programs and literature.
