L.A. Park Rangers

Re “City May Limit Park Rangers’ Authority to Make Arrests,” May 22: I am in absolute agreement with Los Angeles in limiting the power of the park rangers. I have been visiting Griffith Park for more than 20 years, and though the park rangers have been “trained” in law enforcement, the occasional negative conduct of the park rangers and their power of arrest have made visiting the park less enjoyable. LAPD officers are more qualified and have additional investigative prowess for any “incident” that may happen in the park. Park rangers abuse the power of arrest even for the slightest infraction.

How preposterous to think that Los Angeles city parks will be made safer by limiting the protective duties of rangers. I’d say just the opposite should happen, and the rangers’ ongoing request to be armed should be granted. The turf they work is undeniably dangerous.

Recreation and Parks General Manager Ellen Oppenheim defies logic when she says, “We don’t want to put more guns in the parks,” but then demands that LAPD take over law enforcement. Last time I looked, when the police show up on a call, they bring guns.
