The Brea Olinda School District says 30 to 40 of the district’s 6,000 students will be held back this year. As a result, the number of summer school students will be much larger than what the small district is used to handling.

Supt. Peggy Lynch said she plans to hire 40 more teachers during the off months to whittle down the student-teacher ratio in summer school classes, to help those who enroll get promoted to a higher grade in the fall. It’s an effort the district has been making since 1998, when it had 23 summer school teachers at the elementary level and a student-teacher ratio of 30 to 1.
