From Times Wire Reports

New York City Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani said he would return $2.8 million to people who contributed to his Senate campaign and ask them to send their money instead to Rep. Rick Lazio. Giuliani, 55, withdrew from the race against Hillary Rodham Clinton on May 19 after announcing he has prostate cancer and marital problems. Lazio, a four-term Republican congressman from Long Island, entered the race the next day. Election laws require Giuliani to return the money that donors earmarked for the general election.
