A North Carolina teenager has been rescued from kidnappers who held her captive in the Mexican border city of Tijuana, FBI officials said.

The 17-year-old victim, whose name was not released, disappeared from Statesville, N.C., on May 13. She turned up in Tijuana, where she managed to telephone her parents and tell them she was being held against her will, the FBI said in a statement.

The parents traveled to San Diego and alerted the bureau, which sought assistance from Mexican law enforcement officials.

The victim was found in a Tijuana home with two men, also from Statesville. They were taken to the San Ysidro border crossing, where the girl was reunited with her parents Thursday afternoon.

Kevin Charles Jackson, 23, and Max Benfield, 18, were arrested on outstanding North Carolina warrants for cocaine possession.

Both men were booked into the San Diego County Jail pending an investigation.
