Bush Said to Consider Danforth
Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush is seriously considering picking former Sen. John Danforth of Missouri to be his running mate, Time magazine reported in its latest edition.
Dick Cheney, who heads Bush’s vice presidential search team, sent feelers to Danforth last week and got positive responses, the magazine said in its issue out Monday.
Danforth himself declined to discuss his possible selection with Time, the magazine said.
Danforth, 63, is an Episcopal priest who is 10 years older than Bush.
Danforth’s name is one of many to be floated as both Bush and his likely opponent, Vice President Al Gore, consider possible running mates in advance of the Republican National Convention that starts July 31 and its Democratic counterpart two weeks later.
Among other names circulating in the Bush campaign are Govs. Thomas J. Ridge of Pennsylvania, Tommy G. Thompson of Wisconsin, John Engler of Michigan and Frank Keating of Oklahoma. Rep. John R. Kasich and Sen. George Voinovich, both of Ohio, have also been mentioned. Sen. Charles Hagel of Nebraska told Reuters last week he had been contacted by Cheney.
