British police Sunday charged a man with the murder of television personality Jill Dando, more than a year after she was gunned down on the doorstep of her London home.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said that Barry Michael George, also known as Barry Bulsara, had been charged in the death of the popular TV newscaster and would appear today before West London Magistrates Court.

George, an unemployed 40-year-old who lived in the same west London district as Dando, had been held for questioning since police raided his home Thursday.

Dando, 37, was shot in the head at point-blank range as she returned from shopping errands in April 1999. She was a regular on news and current affairs programs for the BBC.

Police floated several theories about the killing, speculating that Dando might have been slain by an obsessive stalker or targeted by a hit man as a result of her involvement in the program “Crimewatch,” which appeals to the public for help in solving real crimes.
