The designs are in and Irvine’s future Beckman High School will boast enviable high-tech features, a performing arts center and a full sports facility.

But before the first students take their seats in 2003, the Tustin Unified School District, which covers part of Irvine, and Irvine officials will work out how much the school will share with the city.

The first issue is a planned 10-acre community park bordering the high school. School officials would like their students to be able to use park amenities such as lighted tennis courts and softball and soccer fields. But they also want some control over where and when.

A swimming pool may become more of a sticking point as both cities are desperate for swim time for a vast range of clubs and community groups. The size of the pool will hinge on the issue of dual use by the school and others in the area, district officials said.
